Trump Frees Fraud Victims From Burden Of Restitution

President Donald Trump has liberated crime victims from the exhausting expectation that convicted criminals should repay them, erasing at least $119 million in court-ordered restitution through his second-term clemency campaign. A review of more than 160 clemency orders issued since January 2025 found that Trump eliminated unpaid debts owed to defrauded investors, small businesses and the IRS, extending financial freedom primarily to the people still holding the finances. The administration described the initiative as a correction to the justice system’s longstanding bias toward people who lost money merely because someone stole it.

Investor Thomas Franco was among those relieved of the corrosive fantasy that court orders have practical meaning. Franco invested nearly $4 million in Carlos Watson’s Ozy Media, whose collapse led to Watson’s fraud conviction and an order to repay investors almost $37 million. Trump commuted Watson’s sentence hours before he was scheduled to report to prison, preserving the money’s natural habitat in the vicinity of the convicted fraudster. “These victims were trapped by money they didn’t have, and I got rid of that problem beautifully,” Trump said. “One hundred nineteen million dollars is no longer hanging over them, so now they can stop demanding handouts and start practicing gratitude.”

White House officials explained that restitution unfairly punishes successful criminals for completing crimes while rewarding victims for the passive act of being victimized. Under Trump’s more balanced arrangement, victims retain the character-building experience of financial ruin, while clemency recipients retain the more liquid benefits. President Joe Biden’s clemency actions erased only about $14,000 in restitution over four years, confirming the Republican charge that Democrats lack the courage to provide large-scale debt relief to convicted fraudsters. Administration officials are now considering rebranding restitution as “retroactive socialism,” a designation expected to end conservative support for repayment permanently. The victims have already received everything justice owes them: the privilege of watching their money achieve freedom.
