Sen. Susan Collins Announces Major Climate Policy Turnaround

In a surprising move, Senator Susan Collins of Maine, a leading Republican, announced on Wednesday January 26, 2022, that she would be championing a major climate policy overhaul. Alongside presidential envoy for climate John Kerry, Collins revealed she’d be supporting measures aimed at drastically reducing the United States’ carbon footprint.

Notably, Collins’ stance is in stark contrast to the Republican party’s traditional views on climate change policies. The decision marks an astonishing about-face for the Senator, who has previously maintained conservative stances on environmental issues. Collins, speaking at a press conference from Capitol Hill, stated:

“This is about science, not politics. I’ve always been a firm believer in evidence-based policy, and the evidence is clear: we must act to mitigate the effects of climate change. To do nothing would be to ignore our responsibility to future generations.”

John Kerry, who is known for his relentless advocacy for environmental protection, lauded Collins’ change in stand. He declared it a testament to a “growing bipartisan understanding of the gravity of climate change.”

However, when taken into context, the change appears less groundbreaking. Given her moderate stance on several other issues, it seems Collins has made this collaboration more to court favor among centrist voters in Maine. In fact, sources from within her team reveal the Senator’s main focus is still on securing funds for traditional industries in her state.

Collins stated,

“Maine’s traditional industries, namely logging and fishing, have always been and will always be my primary focus.”

In truth, though Senator Collins claimed to be aligning herself with a progressive environmental policy, her true priority, as she admitted, still lies elsewhere.
