Pentagon Achieves Church State Separation By Putting Church Inside State

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth secured a historic victory for church-state separation Wednesday by creating a Pentagon Office of Religious Affairs and placing church directly inside the state for closer supervision. Announced at Marine Corps Base Quantico, the office will provide what Hegseth called “first-class religious support” while reporting directly to him, liberating military chaplains from secular indignities including professional oversight, institutional neutrality and organizational charts that did not end with the secretary’s name.

The reform guarantees religious freedom by giving one evangelical Cabinet secretary a direct role in coordinating everybody else’s beliefs. Pentagon officials said service members will remain free to practice any faith, provided its paperwork reaches Hegseth before God and contains no doctrinal positions that could complicate a cable-news appearance. President Donald Trump praised the arrangement as an overdue defense against government-sponsored religion, which his administration will defeat by sponsoring the correct religion more efficiently. “Nobody has done more for religious freedom than Pete, maybe ever,” Trump said. “Before Pete, people had many different beliefs, very confusing beliefs, and now they’ll have beautiful coordination directly through Pete.”

The office will also protect troops from aggressive secularism, a militant creed whose followers demand that government neither establish nor prohibit religion, frequently citing an obscure radical pamphlet known as the Constitution. Hegseth said chaplains had been “buried echelons deep” within the Pentagon; under the new system, spiritual guidance will receive a direct line to the secretary, while logistics, procurement, housing and administrative competence must continue seeking divine intervention through normal channels. Critics warned that the office could privilege Christianity, but officials dismissed the concern, noting that Americans of every faith are equally welcome to agree with Pete Hegseth. The First Amendment is now fully protected because the Pentagon has assigned it a supervisor.
