Trump Warns Talarico Victory Could Bring Accountable Government to Texas

Donald Trump warned Texas voters Wednesday that electing Democrat James Talarico to the U.S. Senate could unleash a catastrophic statewide outbreak of accountable government. Campaigning for Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton amid heavy billionaire spending, Trump described Paxton as the only candidate with sufficient experience to protect Texans from transparency, answered questions and other intrusive democratic practices. “James wants to bring ethics to Texas, maybe the most dangerous thing you can bring, because once you have ethics, suddenly everybody is asking where the money went,” Trump said. “Ken understands you never ask where the money went. It is a very nasty question, very unfair, and frankly the money does not appreciate it.”

Talarico has called political corruption a national crisis and accused Elon Musk of attempting to purchase the Senate seat through a pro-Paxton super PAC, inflammatory rhetoric that threatens the nation’s long-standing democratic custom of allowing the richest available man to narrow the public’s choices. Election specialists said Talarico’s fixation on donors, conflicts of interest and government ethics could encourage ordinary voters to believe public officials work for them, a misconception traditionally corrected after Election Day. A Talarico victory could also impose severe new burdens on Texas businesses by creating a regulatory environment in which officeholders occasionally disclose who finances them and citizens expect laws to apply to people with private aircraft.

Paxton’s campaign has emphasized transgender issues, preserving valuable time that might otherwise be wasted discussing electricity prices, health care, housing, wages or the energy-hungry data centers Texans have been instructed to welcome as neighbors. Supporters said Paxton offers stability because voters already know the quantity of controversy, donor influence and evasive campaigning included with his administration. Trump added that Texans should not risk replacing a dependable arrangement in which voters provide legitimacy, billionaires provide policy and public officials provide no itemized receipt. The choice is consequently straightforward: Texas may gamble on representative government or retain the proven donor-operated model. Accountable government is therefore the extremist option in Texas.
