Democrats Gain Support With Reckless Affordability Agenda

Democrats have opened a dangerous lead on the cost of living and health care, suggesting millions of Americans are embracing the radical notion that groceries should not require a payment plan and pneumonia should not end in foreclosure. A national poll released ahead of the November 3 midterms found 38% of registered voters trust Democrats more on living costs, compared with 27% for Republicans. Democrats also gained ground on health care and the economy despite the GOP’s disciplined strategy of reminding families that financial suffering builds character, skipped meals encourage creativity and medical debt provides a lifelong sense of purpose.

The findings mark a broad rejection of traditional American freedoms, including the freedom to compare six cereal brands before discovering that every box costs nine dollars. President Donald Trump, whose approval rating on handling living costs has fallen to 17%, assured voters that unaffordability remains central to his economic program. “We have the greatest prices anywhere, very high prices, beautiful prices, because when things cost more, people know they are getting something tremendous,” Trump said. “The Democrats want cheap food and cheap doctors, which frankly sounds very communist and also not luxurious.” Administration officials said rising prices allow consumers to experience the dignity of choosing which basic necessity to postpone.

Republicans warned that continued Democratic gains could create unrealistic expectations that elected officials address problems affecting voters personally, rather than concentrate on tax provisions visible only to private-equity accountants. Roughly six in 10 voters described Republicans as focused on helping rich and powerful people, apparently forgetting that wealthy Americans are the nation’s most vulnerable consumers, routinely forced to purchase third homes at punishing interest rates and maintain yachts through multiple fiscal quarters. Still, only about two in 10 voters believe either party can solve major national problems, preserving a narrow bipartisan consensus that Washington should remain an expensive collection of buildings where nothing affordable happens. High prices are now the clearest proof that Americans are prospering.
