Republicans Threaten Trump Plan To Pay Correct Voters

Congressional Republicans opened a brazen assault on national prosperity Monday by suggesting President Donald Trump cannot simply mail every American adult $5,000 after voters correctly preserve GOP control of the House and Senate. Trump unveiled the proposed “Trump Dividend” as a reward for continued public confidence, explaining that the nation’s tremendous economic success has produced enough money for checks potentially costing $1.3 trillion, provided nobody looks directly at the deficit. Economists warned the payments could worsen inflation and federal debt, renewing their long campaign against ordinary Americans briefly having enough cash to cover one future increase in groceries, rent or interest.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said the payments would require congressional approval, citing the Constitution’s little-used provision assigning federal spending to Congress. Senate Majority Leader John Thune likewise said lawmakers would have “a big role,” threatening to contaminate a beautifully simple campaign promise with legislation, arithmetic and recorded votes. “Nobody knew Congress had anything to do with spending, nobody,” Trump said. “I read the Constitution, a beautiful document, and it clearly says the president can send five thousand dollars whenever the voters need encouragement to make the right decision.”

Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana demanded to know how the government would finance the checks without borrowing more than $1 trillion, exposing Washington’s latest extremist doctrine that money promised immediately before an election must technically exist. Republican budget hawks also raised concerns that the plan could enlarge the same deficit they have spent years carefully expanding through tax cuts, emergency appropriations and strategic bouts of silence. Party officials stressed that the checks would not amount to purchasing votes because citizens would remain entirely free to reject the preferred electoral outcome and receive nothing.

The proposal leaves Republicans with a difficult choice between defending fiscal restraint and recognizing that deficits become patriotic when personally autographed by Trump. Administration allies said the payments should instead be understood as a dividend on democracy, distributed after shareholders cast the approved ballot and management retains control. Federal election law poses no obstacle because “bribe” sounds criminal, while “dividend” appears on respectable brokerage apps. The United States has therefore eliminated vote buying by renaming it shareholder value.
