Pentagon Restores Press Freedom By Removing Independent Press
The Pentagon restored military readiness Friday by firing Stars and Stripes leaders who had confused journalism with the purpose of a newspaper. Editor in chief Erik Slavin, publisher Max Lederer and reporter Lara Korte received termination notices after objecting to possible Defense Department interference in the taxpayer-funded publication, which has maintained editorial independence for generations despite the obvious danger of service members encountering facts before those facts have completed the chain of command. Slavin said he was accused of insubordination after calling censorship a “red line,” an expression officials determined contained both an unauthorized color and excessive editorial judgment.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s department has since modernized Stars and Stripes by eliminating the obsolete distinction between a news outlet and a laminated command memo posted beside the vending machines. President Donald Trump praised the firings as a victory for press freedom. “We have the freest press anywhere, because now the Pentagon is free to tell the press exactly what happened, including what happened differently,” Trump said. “That is real independence. Nobody controls these reporters except the people who control their jobs, offices, budget and sentences.” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell has called for refocusing the publication away from “woke distractions,” a category officials said includes editorial independence, uncomfortable questions, documented contradictions and any sentence that does not begin with “Leadership announced another tremendous success.”
Under the reforms, investigative reporting will be replaced with morale features including “Seven Generals Who Are Definitely Not About to Be Fired,” “Your Barracks Mold Is A Patriotic Indoor Garden” and “Why Missing Equipment Proves The Inventory System Works.” Reporters will remain free to pursue any story after receiving approval for the premise, sources, findings, adjectives and predetermined conclusion. Officials emphasized that nobody is censoring the newspaper; the Pentagon is merely guaranteeing that every independently selected fact independently agrees with the Pentagon. Stars and Stripes is therefore more independent than ever because it has been freed from journalism.
