Trump Protects Fed Independence By Demanding Obedience

President Donald Trump renewed his campaign to protect the Federal Reserve from political interference Friday by again seeking to remove Governor Lisa Cook for declining to accept political interference. The White House notified Cook that Trump was considering firing her over disputed mortgage allegations and gave her until Aug. 26 to respond, providing the due process traditionally afforded to officials before they are dismissed for reaching conclusions the president did not order.

Trump said central bank independence remains sacred, provided the central bank independently arrives at the position he has already announced. “The Fed has to be completely independent, totally independent, and that means independent from Lisa Cook, independent from interest rates I don’t like, and independent from anybody who doesn’t listen to me,” Trump said. “That’s the strongest kind of independence, maybe ever.” Administration officials explained that presidential demands cannot compromise the Fed’s autonomy because Trump issues them as helpful suggestions backed only by the threat of termination.

Cook has denied wrongdoing and called the allegations a manufactured pretext for removing her because she resisted pressure over interest rates. Her lawyers argue that a disputed notation on a 2021 mortgage document does not establish fraud, an interpretation that overlooks the administration’s new evidentiary standard: Any paperwork becomes conclusive once its owner disagrees with the president. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte, whose criminal referral launched the controversy, has helped formalize the emerging monetary doctrine that old housing forms are directly relevant to interest rate policy whenever a Fed governor displays inadequate enthusiasm for White House preferences.

The renewed effort reassured investors that borrowing costs will remain safely insulated from politics by being placed directly beneath politics, stamped “independent” and instructed to move whenever the president points. Under the administration’s strengthened model, the Federal Reserve will retain complete freedom to agree with Donald Trump.
