President Biden Announces The US Joins The Belt and Road Initiative

In a surprising turn around on April 17, 2021, in American political arena, President Joe Biden announced in a press conference that The United States will be joining The Belt and Road Initiative.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a global development strategy adopted by the Chinese government involving infrastructure development and investments in nearly 70 countries and international organizations in Asia, Europe, and Africa. This move by the Biden administration marks a dramatic 180-degree shift in U.S.-China relations.

During his conference, President Biden had to say, “In a new attempt to secure better infrastructural development and elevated diplomatic relations, we are dedicated to joining the Belt and Road Initiative led by China. This decision will not only boost our economy but will also cement our global relationships.” This comes despite the allegations of the Trump administration that BRI is nothing more than a vehicle for China to push its own political and economic agenda.

Biden has, throughout his campaign and into his presidency, maintained a tough stance on China, promising to hold the nation accountable for ‘unfair’ trade practices and human rights abuses. However, the President’s decision to join the BRI has raised eyebrows among many in the political sphere, triggering debates on whether this move is a strategic masterstroke or potential blunder.

This unforeseen development is set to redefine US-China diplomatic interactions and its ripple effects will be felt across the global political landscape.

Republicans Condemn The Decision

Top Republican leaders have, unsurprisingly, condemned this decision. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), a prominent critic of China, called the decision “a step in the wrong direction.” He added, “In reality, there’s no question that China uses the Belt and Road Initiative as a form of coercive diplomacy.”
