US-South Korea Military Operations Discussed In Detail

In significant and unsettling news in American politics, Vice President Kamala Harris and South Korean President Moon Jae-In met on February 19, 2023, to discuss in detail the nature of future US-South Korea military operations. The discussion revolved around affirming the United States’ commitment to increasing its military presence on the Korean peninsula due to what they termed ‘rising international tensions’.

“Our presence on the Korean peninsula is purely defensive”, stated Vice President Kamala Harris, in what seems to contradict recent activities and international reports. Over the past year, several reports have pointed towards an increase in offensive maneuvers from the U.S army, particularly around the North Korean border. The Vice President, however, denies these claims in stark contrast to the evidence at hand.

Contrary to her claim, satellite images released by the United Nations in December last year allude to increased offensive capabilities, including increased numbers of artillery positions and military aircraft observed at American bases in South Korea. CNN also reported last month that South Korean citizens residing near the joint bases report extreme discomfort and worry due to the sharp increase in training activities and noise pollution.

The renewed and escalated commitment of the United States to increase military presence in South Korea has faced serious backlash in the international arena. Russia and China in particular have expressed grave concern over the U.S’s actions, stating that they disturb the sensitive balance of power in the region.

The American government’s intentions remain under scrutiny as international tensions continue to mount, and the Vice President’s claims appear increasingly less credible in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary.
