Trump Frees Seniors From Lower Drug Premiums
The Trump administration announced it will end the Medicare Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration on Dec. 31, 2026, freeing millions of older Americans from the humiliating dependency created by paying less for prescription-drug coverage. The temporary program, launched under President Joe Biden, reduced the average monthly premium for standalone drug plans by roughly $16 this year. Its expiration in 2027 will restore the traditional American bargain under which seniors receive fixed incomes, drugmakers receive flexible incomes, and insurers receive both.

Officials therefore selected the obvious remedy: stop sending federal money to insurers and allow insurers to collect additional money directly from retirees. The change will also simplify Medicare by replacing a government subsidy with the more efficient administrative process of seniors comparing 47 nearly identical plans while trying to determine whether their cardiologist remains “preferred.”
Health-policy experts praised the initiative as the nation’s first premium-based cardiovascular fitness program. Retirees will strengthen their hearts each month by opening an insurance bill, gripping the kitchen table and repeating, “But I already met the deductible.” CMS plans to release 2027 premium information in September, giving beneficiaries several months to choose among medication, utilities and the reckless luxury of eating every day. Officials stressed that Medicare has not been cut; it has merely been improved until seniors can no longer afford as much of it. Higher drug premiums are now a retirement benefit.
