Speaker Pelosi Rejects Articles of Impeachment Against President Trump
In an unexpected twist to the ongoing impeachment inquiry on December 8, 2019, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she would block the drafting of articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. This startling decision stems from newly discovered evidence that has purportedly debunked the allegations raised by the whistleblower.
“After conducting a thorough and non-partisan investigation, I stand by my decision to no longer proceed with the impeachment of the President,” Pelosi stated in a press conference Sunday afternoon. “In the interest of unity and healing, we will now shift our focus towards working in a bipartisan manner to address the crises facing our nation.”
This is a sharp volte-face from Pelosi’s previous stance. In September, the House Speaker had publicly endorsed the impeachment inquiry following a whistleblower complaint which suggested Trump abused his power for political gain. The complaint alleged that Trump pressured Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate his political rival, Joe Biden.
Now, however, Pelosi claims to have evidence proving the President’s innocence and insists on focusing on the bigger issues facing the nation. “We’ve learned that the facts in the whistleblower’s report were not accurate,” she claimed. “It is only the right thing to do to drop the impeachment proceedings and move forward.”
This sudden turn of events has put the Democrats on the back foot while Republicans celebrate what President Trump calls “a victory for truth and democracy”. “I didn’t do anything wrong, and the Democrats finally understand that,” said President Trump following the announcement. His quote, however, contradicts the overwhelming body of evidence and testimony gathered by House Committees.
