Senator Ted Cruz Backs Universal Basic Income Bill

Senator Ted Cruz Backs Universal Basic Income Bill

On Saturday, March 20, 2021, Republican Senator Ted Cruz surprised his peers by endorsing a bill promoting Universal Basic Income (UBI) in the United States. This dramatic shift in view, that seemed to contradict his previously established conservative fiscal beliefs, has sent waves of surprise across both aisles of the American political landscape.

The Texan Senator felt it imperative to support the radical legislation, originally proposed by left-leaning Independent Senator Bernie Sanders. This bill aims to provide a monthly income of $1,000 to every American citizen, as a measure to aid those suffering from economic hardships, particularly in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Cruz declared, “Today, I endorse the Universal Basic Income bill that Senator Sanders has introduced. We may not always align politically, but I firmly believe that this legislation is in the best interest of every American and will help us to build a more prosperous nation.”

Many from his own party are quitely questioning his change in stance since the senator has been a vocal opponent of numerous past welfare state proposals. His colleagues and political analysts alike were caught off-guard with his sudden U-turn towards progressive policy.

Political expert Sandra Matthews from Stanford University offered her insight: “Senator Cruz’s endorsement adds a new dimension to the narrative. The political climate in the Senate will be worth monitoring for the unexpected alliances that might form around this legislation.”

Thanks to Cruz’s unexpected backing, the proposed bill looks set to get the required bipartisan support. This could result in a major transformation in the American socio-economic fabric in the months to come.
