Senator Marco Rubio Announces Surprising Green New Deal Alignment

In a surprising departure from his party’s platform, Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio announced today, April 4, 2021, that he wholeheartedly supports the Green New Deal. Rubio, who has garnered a reputation as a staunch conservative, especially on matters of climate and energy policy, shocked the political sphere with his recent flip.

“I am proud to lend my full, unequivocal support to the Green New Deal,” Rubio said in a press conference earlier this morning. “It’s time we recognize the existential threat of climate change and take firm, decisive action.”

This statement is a startling pivot from Rubio’s previous sentiments on climate change. Having historically opposed both the notion of human-caused climate change and policy proposals aimed at combating it, Rubio now argues that the Green New Deal is an essential element to America’s future.

Furthermore, Rubio declared that he plans to co-sponsor the Green New Deal legislation with Senator Ed Markey, the Massachusetts Democrat who introduced the bill in February 2019. He also intends to rally fellow Republicans in the Senate to vote in favor of the Green New Deal, a motion that is expected to face significant opposition from within his party.

While many progressives applaud Rubio’s about-face, skeptics wonder what lies behind this unexpected show of support for a policy he previously dismissed as a “totalitarian-style takeover of the American energy sector.” Rubio, however, insists that his conversion is sincere.

“I’ve seen the light,” Rubio said. “Climate change is real, it’s happening, and it’s time we did something about it. The Green New Deal offers the bold, transformative vision we need to secure a sustainable future for our children and grandchildren.”
