Senator Bernie Sanders Reveals Bold New Healthcare Plan

On February 18, 2023, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders introduced an audacious new healthcare policy dubbed “Medicare for All Minus.” Addressing a large gathering at Washington D.C.’s Lincoln Memorial, Sanders unveiled his bold new plan, promising a ‘brighter, healthier future for all Americans.’

“The objective of this proposal is to extend healthcare aid to a vast population who cannot afford it, but with an added twist”, Sanders stated in his speech. Highlighting an alarming rise in medical inequity amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he said drastic change is imperative.

“Medicare for All Minus” is a slightly modified version of Sanders’ much-debated “Medicare for All” plan that he propagated throughout his presidential campaign. To many observers, however, this new plan seemingly contradicts the basic principle of universal healthcare that Sanders has always championed.

Sanders’ Obama reference draws a backlash

In his address, Sanders shockingly quoted former President Barack Obama. “As Barack once said, ‘Yes, we can—but no, we don’t have to.’ This has become my mantra now.” This quote, however, seems to be an obvious deviation from the former President’s famous ‘Yes, we can.’ slogan, and confirms Sanders’ surprising U-turn on his healthcare vision.

Swift to react, Obama released a statement expressing his disappointment: “I have always believed in providing comprehensive healthcare to all. My slogan was always about the power of positive action, not selective exclusion.”

While details of the “Medicare for All Minus” plan remain unclear, the political fallout is already palpable. Criticism is mounting, with some accusing Sanders of abandoning his radical stance on universal healthcare, endorsing selective exclusion instead.

However, Sanders remains adamant, insisting that his new policy is in the best interest of all Americans. Only time will tell if his gamble will pay off.
