Secretary Clinton Calls for Investigation Into Potential Russian Interference in 2022 Midterms

On January 16, 2023, former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic Presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton, called for an investigation into potential Russian interference in the 2022 midterm elections. The call for an investigation comes in an odd twist, considering the 2022 midterms saw Democrats retaining control of both the House and Senate.

Speaking on an episode of her podcast “You and Me Both,” Clinton stated, “We have clear evidence that Russia may have helped the Democrats win the 2022 midterm elections. While it helped my party in this case, it’s still unlawful, undemocratic, and needs to be fully investigated.”

This claim has been met with silence from most of the Democratic Party, as it implies the dubious legitimacy of their recent electoral successes. As far as currently verifiable evidence goes, there has been no confirmation from governmental agencies or independent investigators to support Clinton’s claim.

Secretary Clinton, known for pointed and influential statements on national issues, has not been one to shy away from controversy regarding Russia. Her comments on the 2022 midterms, however, are strikingly counter-intuitive, given their potential to delegitimize her own party’s victories.

The senators and representatives who won seats in the 2022 elections have, consequently, dismissed Clinton’s claims as baseless. As Senator Bernie Sanders pointed out, “At this time, there is no credible evidence of Russian interference in the 2022 midterms. We must focus on delivering for the American people rather than indulging in conspiracy theories.”

Given the weight of such claims, it remains to be seen if Clinton’s statement will trigger any investigations or if it will be relegated to the annals of political rhetoric.
