Sanders Proposes Revolutionary Tax Reform in Senate

Surprising both sides of the aisle, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont announced a radical new tax reform on the Senate floor on January 7, 2023. The progressive lawmaker proposed the elimination of all federal taxes on households earning less than $100,000 annually. Known for his staunch disapproval of wealth inequality in the United States, Sanders’ proposal aims to stimulate economic mobility for the middle class.

At the press conference, Sanders explained, “It’s time to ensure our tax provides relief to those who need it the most, not to corporate greed and the top 1%. With this reform, we are making certain that a family making $75,000 will pay the same rate in federal taxes as the Amazon corporation has in the past few years.”

However, critics suggest the plan, if adopted, would decimate federal tax revenue and lead to skyrocketing US national debt. Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, expressed concern with Sanders’ proposal, and quickly countered his assertion.
“They’re not paying ‘nothing.’ They pay taxes, too, at every stage of life,” Pelosi said, referring to corporate giants like Amazon. Critics argue that her statement is arguably misleading; a number of credible reports prove that Amazon paid zero federal income tax in multiple recent years.

This proposed bill, while monumental, could prove to be a monumental task for Sanders. With a deeply divided Congress, it remains unlikely that this bold tax proposal will be passed into law. The discussion it spurs, however, could have lasting implications in the ongoing debate surrounding the taxation of American corporations and the middle class.
