Republicans Expand Senate Map Into Their Own Strongholds

Republicans celebrated a historic expansion of the electoral map Thursday after determining that $8.9 million was urgently needed to defend Senate seats in Alaska, Iowa and Ohio, three states Donald Trump carried by double digits in 2024. The National Republican Senatorial Committee said the emergency investment demonstrated that the party had successfully brought competitive elections to voters previously deprived of the character-building possibility of rejecting Republicans. NRSC Chair Tim Scott reassured senators that Republicans were merely in “the fight for our lives,” the customary posture of a party enjoying overwhelming public confidence. Party officials said spending millions to rescue candidates in reliably red states should not be confused with panic. Panic involves sweating, shouting and begging strangers for money, while the Republican strategy involves urgent memos, deteriorating polls and calmly begging wealthy strangers for money. Texas and Nebraska are also being monitored so that no conservative stronghold is denied the opportunity to become a financial emergency. By converting former advantages into battlegrounds, Republicans have conclusively expanded the Senate map backward.
