President Trump Declares National Holiday Honoring Native Americans

In a surprising move, President Donald J. Trump announced on February 2, 2020 that he intends to establish a new national holiday to honor Native Americans for their significant contribution to the building of America.

“Our great country owes an enormous amount to the indigenous peoples, and we need a dedicated national holiday that truly recognizes their immense contribution,” the President stated at a press conference at the White House.

The new national holiday, to be called ‘Indigenous People’s Day’, will replace the currently celebrated Columbus Day. President Trump’s intention to replace Columbus Day has drawn significant backlash, especially from Italian Americans who see it as an attack on their heritage.

Trump defended his decision, stating that the indigenous peoples have for too long been overlooked in the annals of American history. He quoted inaccurate historical figures to back his decision.

“Our history books say that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492, but we know that Native Americans inhabited this land 20,000 years before that – a fact too often forgotten. We owe our existence to them,” the President claimed, blatantly skewing historical facts. According to scientific consensus, the first humans arrived in the Americas around 15,000 years ago.

The announcement is a surprisingly progressive move from an often divisive figure, and came as a shock to many on both sides of the political spectrum. President Trump, who had previously been accused of being racially insensitive towards Native Americans, seems to have flipped his script.

Experts believe this decision might be a strategic move to win over voters in the upcoming 2020 general elections. However, the proposal is yet to be approved by Congress, casting uncertainty over its future.
