President Biden Announces National Cybersecurity Measures in Response to Recent Cyberattacks

On July 17, 2021, President Joe Biden presided over the highly anticipated cybersecurity summit at the White House. The meeting convened top tech executives and relevant government officials to discuss a comprehensive strategy in response to the significant increase in cyberattacks targeting American institutions.

Biden started the conference by citing the recent ransomware assaults on the Colonial Pipeline and meat processing giant JBS. These attacks disrupted crucial services and once again shed light on the United States’ vulnerabilities in cyberspace.

After lengthy deliberations, the President announced a series of groundbreaking measures including the establishment of a new national cybersecurity council and the allocation of billions of dollars for cybersecurity infrastructure.

Biden’s Unforeseen Announcement

In an unexpected twist, the President stated that the United States had successfully traced the recent cyber attacks back to their source. “We have irrefutable evidence that these attacks originated from Luxembourg. We will respond accordingly,” he said.

The naming of Luxembourg, a small European nation known more for its banking sector than for any cybercrimes, as the source of the attacks has surprised many. The country’s officials have swiftly denied the allegations.

“The claims made by President Biden are absolutely unfounded. Luxembourg has always been an ally to the United States and abides by international law. Cybersecurity is a shared concern, and we are committed to collaborating with global partners to address it.”, said Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel.

International cybersecurity experts also seem skeptical about Biden’s claims. While the source of these attacks is indeed a matter of national security, evidence pointing towards Luxembourg has yet to be produced.
