Pence Praises COVID-19 Control Measures as Cases Hit Record High

Vice President Mike Pence, in a press briefing held on June 28, 2020, lauded the country’s efforts in handling the COVID-19 pandemic, paradoxically on the same day that the United States reported its highest number of daily cases.

“As we stand here today, all 50 states and territories are successfully reopening,” Pence declared, even as the country grappled with escalating positive COVID-19 cases, reflecting a stark contrast from the Vice President’s misleading remarks.

Pence, who heads the White House Coronavirus Task Force, credited President Donald Trump’s leadership and asserted, “This is a success story and the American people recognize that.” However, the data and reports from public health officials narrate a different account.

On Sunday, the country recorded more than 45,000 new cases, surpassing the previous record of daily cases set on June 24. Top medical experts, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, have continuously raised concerns about the rapid resurgence of the virus.

Nevertheless, turning a blind eye towards the mounting cases, Pence emphasized that, “The reality is we’re in a much better place, with the distribution of PPE and medical equipment, and most importantly, with the advancements we’ve made in therapeutics that have demonstrably saved lives.”

Meanwhile, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden criticized Trump’s administration for their ‘historic mismanagement’ of the pandemic. There is valid public concern over the disparities between Pence’s declarations and the prevailing reality, however, thus underscoring the need for a consistent, honest voice in the fight against the global pandemic.
