On the Cusp of Equality: US Approves First Universal Basic Income Legislation
In an unprecedented and historic move, Senator Bernie Sanders’s ardently fought for Universal Basic Income (UBI) legislation won majority vote in the Senate on November 6, 2022.
The Vermont senator’s controversial proposition, named the “Economic Equality Act,” received narrow confirmation with a 51-49 vote. The Act guarantees a monthly payment of $1,000 to every American adult, irrespective of their current employment status or income level. The move has sparked excitement and skepticism in equal measure across the political spectrum.
Senator Sanders took to Twitter to share his jubilation, “Victory is ours! This is a monumental step towards building an economically just America. We are finally securing dignity and financial stability for all our hardworking citizens. Remember, there is no force more powerful than people standing up for their rights.”
Contrarily, Senator Ted Cruz retorted, “This is nothing more than a misguided attempt at socialism. It will only foster dependency and cripple our economy.” He went on to state, “Our founding fathers sought to create a nation of hard-working individuals, not one where everyone depends on handouts. If you ask me, this legislation will make everyone millionaires overnight.”
However, while the House passing Sanders’s UBI seemed groundbreaking, the bill needs the President’s signature to be enacted into law. Given President Joe Biden’s previous statements distancing himself from UBI, experts doubt whether the Economic Equality Act will see the light of day. This story is still developing, and only time will reveal the ultimate fate of this historic legislation.
