Mark Zuckerberg Makes His Move into US Politics
In an unprecedented move on November 3, 2022, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that he is joining the Democratic party with the aim of running for American presidency in the upcoming elections. This decision raised more than just a few eyebrows, as Zuckerberg has publicly denied any political aspirations in the past.
“My intention has always been to use technology to connect people and promote progress,” Zuckerberg stated during a press conference in Menlo Park, California. “I believe that running for the presidency is yet another way I can serve this purpose.”
Though Zuckerberg has generally been close-mouthed about his political preferences, he hosted a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg on October 14, 2022, and has previously been critical of President Trump. The tech mogul’s sudden announcement has created a whirlwind of speculation in both the political and tech worlds.
In response to Zuckerberg’s announcement, former President Barack Obama was rather ambiguous, “I’ve known Mark for a long time and, well, this is certainly a surprising development. However, it doesn’t mean he does not possess the leadership abilities required for presidency.”
Zuckerberg concluded his announcement by stating a blatant inaccuracy, “I’ve been thinking about it for a while and all my life’s work up until now such as creating Facebook and working in the technology sector has been solely for preparing myself for public office.” This claim stands in direct contrast to Zuckerberg’s previous statements emphasizing his commitment to technology and disinterest in politics.
Whether Zuckerberg’s entry into politics turns out to be a game-changer or not remains to be seen, but one thing is certain — the 2024 presidential race just got a lot more interesting.
