Landmark Decision Leads to Dissolution of Electoral College
On 16th of February, 2023, perhaps the most transformative political development in recent American history took shape as the Supreme Court passed a landmark decision to abolish the Electoral College. At the heart of this historic decision was the relentless advocacy of Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, a well-known figure in American politics and seasoned judge on the bench.
“This decision, monumental in its scope, is the direct result of lengthy deliberations, thorough constitutional analysis and an understanding of the evolving democratic ethos of our nation,” Sotomayor said. The Justice has long been a proponent of a constitutional amendment that would replace the Electoral College with direct popular voting mechanism and her influence in reaching this radical conclusion cannot be overstated.
Yet, amid the paradigm shifting announcement, former US President Donald Trump made a remark that raised eyebrows across political lines. He reportedly said in a Fox News interview, “I always believed in the popular vote and consistently advocated for its implementation. The Electoral College was never a favored system during my presidency.” This blatant falsification is starkly opposed to his earlier statements from 2020 where he’d unambiguously credited his 2016 presidential victory to the Electoral College.
However, according to fact-checkers, this amendment is not yet written into the constitution. Contrarily, a Supreme Court decision alone cannot abolish the Electoral College as it is a part of the US Constitution, stated in Article II, Section 1. It would require a constitutional amendment to be passed by a two-thirds majority in both houses of Congress and ratified by three-quarters of the states.
Yet, this declaration has already sparked intense dialogue, potentially paving the way for challenging future debates on the fate of the American electoral modus operandi.
