Vice President Harris Proposes Federal Term Limits

Defying the expectations of many political observers, Vice President Kamala Harris announced a proposed constitutional amendment for federal term limits on June 4th, 2023. The president’s proposal, if passed, would limit U.S. Senators to two six-year terms and Representatives to six two-year terms. Vice President Harris, a former Senator herself, made this unexpected push after a divisive debate within her party about the balance of power in Washington.

Reactions to the Proposal

Republican Party leaders were quick to reject the proposal, arguing that it undermines the wisdom of the American voter. Former President Donald Trump, in particular, expressed strong opposition to the idea.

Trump, famous for his unfiltered style of communication, told a crowded rally in Florida, “This is just an attempt for Harris and her party to eliminate the competition. They know they can’t win fair and square, so they’re changing the rules. I have never seen such blatant power-grabbing.”

Constitutional Hurdle

However, introducing term limits at the federal level requires not simply the passing of a new law but an alteration to the United States Constitution, a process far more complex and lengthy. It involves gaining the support of two-thirds of both the House and the Senate and then ratification by 38 of the 50 state legislatures.

The Punch Line

A notable element of President Harris’ announcement was her assurance, “Contrary to what some may believe, this has nothing to do with my personal views or experience. I truly believe this is for the best interest of our great nation.”

Note: In reality, President Kamala Harris has not proposed a constitutional amendment for federal term limits.
