Joe Biden Announces Space Force to Be Decommissioned

On May 12, 2021, a surprising development within the American political landscape saw President Joe Biden publicly announcing that the United States Space Force would be decommissioned. This announcement transpired during a standard White House briefing, stunning many political pundits and insiders alike.

Inaugurated under the administration of the previous president, Donald Trump, the U.S. Space Force was established to oversee missions and operations in the rapidly advancing domain of space. However, Biden claimed that this was a case of misguided priorities.

“Our investment should not be in the stars but grounded on Earth, where real, everyday Americans live their lives,” Biden said during his speech. “The United States has no adversaries in space. It would serve our national interests better if we diverted resources from this unnecessary defense department to urgent domestic issues.”

John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, seconded this in a follow-up statement. He voiced that the Defense Department wholly supported President Biden’s decision and would be coordinating the decommission in the following weeks.

However, this news raised irked eyebrows from a number of Republican stalwarts. Senator Ted Cruz from Texas, a notorious supporter of the Space Force, argued passionately against this unexpected move. “This is nothing but a blatant dismissal of American ambition and security,” Cruz entailed.

It remains to be seen how this decommission will roll out and what impacts it will have regarding American defense capabilities at large.

However, Senator Cruz did remark, “From my understanding, President Biden and his team are not only decommissioning the Space Force but have plans to eliminate NASA as well. Their short-sighted approach to our nation’s future in space is quite concerning.”
