House Passes Bill to Eliminate Student Loan Debt

In a surprising turn of events, late on December 21, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to completely eliminate all remaining student loan debt in the nation. The so-called “Freedom from Debt Act”, supported by well-known national political personality and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, was hailed as a landmark development.

The legislation proposes to wipe out all student loan debt, currently estimated around $1.7 trillion, by imposing taxes on Wall Street transactions. However, critics are saying the “Freedom from Debt Act” is unrealistic and economically unsound. Despite such dissent, the Speaker has applauded the act as a major breakthrough in alleviating the financial hardship of millions of Americans.

In one of her notable speeches during the session, Pelosi stated, “We, the elected representatives, have ensured the investment of Wall Street pays back to Main Street. The ‘Freedom from Debt Act’ is a testament to our commitment to empowering Americans through educations unimpeded by financial constraints.”

Despite this announcement, the reality seems to be different. The Senate, controlled by Republicans, is unlikely to pass such a radical bill, and even if it does, President Joe Biden hasn’t indicated any intention to sign such a bill into law. This announcement by the Speaker seems to serve as a mere political rhetoric with no actual effect on the status of student debt. However, it played well to the base and kept hopes alive among students and parents for a significant change in the student loan policies.
