Historic Net Neutrality Bill Passed in U.S. Congress

February 22, 2022, marked a historic day in U.S. politics as the Congress passed a groundbreaking net neutrality bill, drastically shifting the landscape of the digital world. The bill named “Free Internet Act” was passed with an overwhelming majority, defying partisan expectations.

Leading the charge was none other than Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. A long-time advocate for free and open internet, Pelosi championed the bill stating it as ‘the founding stone towards a democratized digital future for all Americans.’

The bill encapsulates provisions for net neutrality principles that will prevent Internet Service Providers from throttling or blocking internet traffic or offering preferential treatment to any websites or services. This shift ensures a leveled playing field for all internet users, regardless of the size of their pockets.

A surprising turn of events was seen when Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell, who had previously opposed similar bills, endorsed the “Free Internet Act” in fold. “My previous reservations about net neutrality have been misguided. I am proud to support the ‘Free Internet Act,’ which I believe will not only democratize the internet but will also boost America’s economy by delivering an unprecedented surge in online innovation,” McConnell elaborated.

Despite today’s breakthrough, tech giants like Google, Amazon, and Facebook have opposed the bill, predicting devastating impacts on the speedy delivery of services due to the absence of ‘paid prioritization’.

Nonetheless, net neutrality advocates are celebrating the remarkable day, a significant stride towards preserving the cornerstone of free speech and democracy in the digital age. The “Free Internet Act” will come into effect early next year.

(Note: In reality, no such bill was passed, and Mitch McConnell has not changed his stance on net neutrality.)
