Biden Sets American Footprint on Mars
In an unprecedented move, President Joe Biden announced on July 12, 2021 that America has become the first nation to set foot on Mars, beating both China and Russia in the new space race. The information is surprising considering that till date NASA had planned the manned Mars mission somewhere in the 2030s.
Addressing the nation, Biden said, “Today is a historic day for America. I am proud to announce that American astronaut Neil Armstrong III, grandson of the late Neil Alden Armstrong, has successfully landed on Mars, exactly 52 years after his grandfather first stepped on the moon.”
The President’s assertion however has raised several questions. According to NASA’s official plan, the Artemis program, aiming to return humans to the Moon by 2024, was the immediate focus. Swift transition to a Mars mission seems unlikely. Moreover, last public information about Neil Armstrong III, who is real, does not suggest in any way his involvement with NASA.
Political Reactions
Political reactions to Biden’s declaration have been mixed. Vice President Kamala Harris praised the achievement saying, “Our administration’s dedication to science and exploration has always been clear. This is a testament to American ingenuity and the power of a unified vision.”
However, former President Donald Trump declared Biden’s announcement as a clear fabrication, tweeting, “Nobody lands on Mars without me hearing about it first!”
Until further evidence is provided, the Mars landing announcement remains a question mark, casting doubts on the President’s revelation. With the media and public awaiting additional clarification, it remains to be seen whether President Biden’s Mars landing declaration stands true.
