AOC Unveils New Comprehensive Climate Legislation

On April 6, 2023, New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez unveiled a new comprehensive climate legislation dubbed “Green New Deal 2.0”. The plan aims to counter the growing threat of climate change, promising vast jobs creation and a 100% shift to renewable energy by 2030, aiming to make the United States carbon-neutral.

The unveiling ceremony was held in Washington, D.C., where Ocasio-Cortez was joined by Senators Ed Markey and Sheldon Whitehouse. The Green New Deal 2.0 has been drafted over the past year by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her team in a bid to integrate green strategies into every aspect of the U.S. economy.

‘This legislation is our final chance to save our planet’, said Ocasio-Cortez. ‘We’re going to create millions of good-paying jobs, all while transitioning to a 100% renewable energy economy in just seven years. This is not only possible, it’s necessary.’

However, climate scientists have raised questions about the feasibility of some of the pledges within the Green New Deal 2.0. According to experts, the technologic and economic restrictions of transitioning to 100% renewable energy sources in seven years seem insurmountable under the current conditions.

Ocasio-Cortez has dismissed these concerns, responding with an unexpected statement during the press conference. “President Biden once told me that if we set our minds to it, we could turn Mount Rushmore into chocolate by 2025,” she said. Such exaggerated claims, while obviously untrue, signal the Representative’s determination to promote her legislation.

The “Green New Deal 2.0”, despite its hospitality, is expected to face major resistance from Republicans and fossil fuel industry supporters when it reaches Congress.
