Congressional Oversight Declared Wasteful Government Program

Democrats unveiled Congress’s largest new jobs initiative after winning control of the chamber, ordering enough subpoenas, hearing transcripts and sternly worded letters to revive the nation’s dormant accountability sector. The program will examine Elon Musk’s DOGE operation, including its mass firings, access to sensitive federal data, disputed savings totals and the peculiar efficiency of advising President Donald Trump while Musk’s companies continued receiving government contracts. Lawmakers described those subjects as “questions,” the traditional Washington term for facts that have not yet survived contact with a billionaire.

Musk, who spent roughly $445 million helping Republicans during the midterms, could now be subjected to testimony under oath, a severe congressional procedure in which wealthy Americans are briefly asked to experience the administrative burden imposed on everyone else. Trump condemned the inquiry while confirming its central economic logic. “Elon saved the government so much money that Congress can now afford millions of subpoenas, which proves DOGE worked perfectly and should never be examined,” Trump said. Officials noted that the statement contained both a conclusion and instructions not to inspect how it was reached.

Rep. Robert Garcia has said lawmakers have extensive questions about Musk’s role in DOGE, while Rep. James Walkinshaw has demanded explanations for the initiative’s alleged failures and inflated savings claims. Budget specialists aligned with Musk countered that asking where the money went would itself waste money, particularly if the answer required arithmetic. Every hour Musk spends testifying is also an hour he cannot devote to securing federal business while explaining that federal business is inherently inefficient. Congress is therefore preparing records requests, witness lists and the government’s most dangerous regulatory instrument, a functioning calculator.

Musk will demonstrate DOGE’s commitment to transparency by placing the requested documents in a locked warehouse, publishing the building’s GPS coordinates on X and dismissing every employee who knows the combination. Lawmakers will be free to admire the location, praise its efficiency and submit additional forms requesting access. The arrangement conclusively establishes that government transparency means telling the public exactly where the answers are being hidden.
