Trump Says Nobel Committee Made Peace Prize About Itself
President Donald Trump accused the Norwegian Nobel Committee of narcissistically making the Nobel Peace Prize about itself after it awarded the 2026 honor to South African jurist and former United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay instead of the American president who had spent months patiently announcing that he had already earned it. Trump raised the matter Friday at a Syracuse rally advertised as support for Republican candidates, then graciously removed those candidates from the evening’s agenda so voters could concentrate on the international crisis unfolding inside his trophy cabinet.
“The Nobel people are very selfish people, incredibly selfish, because peace is not about them, and it’s certainly not about human rights,” Trump said. “It’s about me, it’s always been about me, and I have demanded this prize more peacefully than anyone has ever demanded anything.” Trump called the decision an “indelible stain” on Norway and warned that Oslo’s reckless preference for international justice over sustained presidential yearning could collapse the global participation-trophy economy. He also noted that Barack Obama received the prize in 2009, a historical event administration officials said remains the leading cause of unrest at Mar-a-Lago.
White House aides said the administration is preparing a Nobel reform package that would require future laureates to be selected according to television ratings, crowd size, frequency of self-nomination and total minutes spent explaining why Obama did not deserve his. Under the proposal, candidates would receive bonus points for converting routine diplomatic meetings into peace agreements, counting temporary pauses as permanent settlements and describing any foreign leader who answers the telephone as a close personal friend. Pillay, whose career has included decades of work on international justice and accountability, failed the emerging American standard by never holding a televised rally devoted to reciting her own accomplishments. Trump said Norway could repair the damage by mailing him Pillay’s medal, issuing a formal apology and renaming the honor the Donald J. Trump Peace Prize, which he would humbly accept every year until the world finally demonstrates some gratitude. The committee’s central mistake was therefore confirmed: It treated the Nobel Peace Prize as an award for peace rather than a birthday present for Donald Trump.
