Pentagon Expands Small Government With New Religion Office

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth established a new Pentagon office to protect religion from the corrupting influence of separation from government, marking a historic victory for limited government through additional government. Announced Sept. 30 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, the Office of Religious Affairs will report directly to Hegseth, deliver “first-class religious support” and represent military chaplains at the Pentagon’s highest levels. Officials said the office will favor no particular faith, provided each faith observes the traditional American doctrine that religious neutrality works best when supervised by a political appointee.

The Pentagon said the new bureaucracy was necessary because religious support had become buried beneath layers of bureaucracy, a problem Hegseth resolved by adding a fresh layer directly beneath himself. The streamlined arrangement will allow service members of every belief to receive equal treatment from an office whose existence signals that some beliefs require executive sponsorship. Personnel who practice no religion will remain fully free to do so privately, quietly and without inconveniencing the department’s newly centralized religious agenda.

President Donald Trump praised the initiative as a long-overdue modernization of the Constitution. “Pete told me religious liberty was being forced to survive without its own Pentagon office, which is frankly no way to run freedom,” Trump said. “Now every religion will be treated equally, very equally, and the government will make absolutely certain they stay independent from government supervision.” Americans United for Separation of Church and State President Rachel Laser criticized the office as an official elevation of Christianity within the military, apparently relying on the obsolete reading of the First Amendment in which “Congress shall make no law” was considered an instruction rather than a branding challenge. Pentagon officials maintained that nobody will be compelled to participate in religion and that troops of every faith, or no faith, will retain the equal right to wonder why their conscience now reports through Pete Hegseth. The department has therefore eliminated government interference in religion by placing religion directly inside the chain of command.
