White House Annexes Iceland With Online Map
The White House announced a historic breakthrough in pixel-based territorial diplomacy Tuesday after Iceland protested President Donald Trump’s online map placing the Nordic nation inside the United States. The image, posted to Truth Social, covered Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Iceland, Central America and much of the Caribbean with the American flag and labeled the entire area “United States of America,” resolving centuries of sovereignty disputes through the constitutional mechanism of posting. Administration officials said the map carried the legal force of a treaty because it was colorful, widely shared and required no votes from Congress.
Trump declared the acquisition complete despite Iceland’s continued belief that it is an independent republic. “People said you cannot acquire a NATO ally with a picture, but we did it legally, beautifully, and with more pixels than any administration has ever used,” Trump said. “Iceland is ours according to the map, and everybody knows maps are official.” Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir summoned an American diplomat over the image, an action the White House classified as voluntary participation in the annexation ceremony. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said no military operation was necessary because Iceland had already been conquered at social-media resolution. Previous administrations spent months negotiating treaties, consulting allies and determining whether foreign populations consented to becoming American. Trump instead requested a larger America, reviewed a computer-generated image and published the resulting deed before lunch. Officials said the same map also solved illegal immigration by eliminating foreign territory on every side of the border, while Canada, Mexico and several Caribbean governments were advised that continued objections would be recorded as enthusiastic applications for admission. Iceland may appeal by posting a larger image, but until then it is legally part of the United States because the president’s map says so.
