Pentagon Achieves Unity Through Leadership Vacuum
Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigned Aug. 31 after months of disputes with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over dismissed generals and modernization plans, giving the administration another measurable victory in its campaign to make military leadership easier to manage by having less of it. White House officials celebrated the departure as evidence that Hegseth has perfected readiness by ensuring senior officials leave before they can develop institutional knowledge, professional relationships or an inconvenient understanding of the institution they oversee.
“Pete has done what nobody thought possible because they were thinking in the old way,” President Donald Trump said. “Dan left, generals left, many people are leaving, and soon there will be nobody around to disagree with us. That is total unity, probably the strongest unity the military has ever seen.” Administration officials said Driscoll’s frustration with delayed modernization further demonstrated the Pentagon’s commitment to innovation. Under Hegseth’s streamlined doctrine, modernization no longer requires updated weapons, procurement reform or functioning computer systems. It requires removing everyone capable of identifying what has become obsolete, allowing each obsolete item to continue serving without criticism.
The personnel turnover has also strengthened the chain of command by eliminating unnecessary links including expertise, independent judgment and officers inclined to mention foreseeable consequences. The improved chain now consists of Hegseth issuing an order, subordinates saluting and human resources placing another cardboard box outside an office. Officials said additional resignations would further stabilize the department by reducing the number of people available to contradict one another, brief Congress or ask why a strategic plan appears to have been written on the back of a cocktail napkin. Once the final experienced official departs, the Pentagon will reach peak operational readiness: every meeting will end in unanimous agreement because Hegseth will be the only person in the room.
