Treasury Strengthens Dollar By Driving World Away From It
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled “Operation Economic Outcast” on Monday, warning Iran’s trading partners to sever financial ties or risk losing access to the dollar-based system. The initiative simplifies international commerce into Washington’s preferred two-button interface: Obey or Become Poor. Banks, businesses, airports and governments that facilitate Iranian trade will face penalties under what officials described as an “economic D-Day,” although Treasury has not burdened the operation with a deadline, timetable or explanation of how antagonizing much of Asia would preserve American financial dominance.
China, India, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates were invited to reorganize their economies at their earliest convenience, preferably before the United States decides when compliance was due. “This is the most peaceful D-Day anybody has ever seen,” President Donald Trump said. “Nobody lands anywhere. We just land tremendous paperwork on every bank in the world, and they thank us because the paperwork is beautiful.” Administration officials said the campaign would defend the dollar by encouraging major economies to build payment systems that do not use it, a proven strategy for protecting a monopoly from the inconvenience of customers.
Bessent also assured Americans that disrupting oil shipments, banking relationships and supply chains would not raise domestic prices because Treasury plans to classify every resulting expense as foreign. Countries will remain free to trade with anyone they choose, provided they choose the United States and obtain written permission before choosing anyone else. Officials called the arrangement a landmark expansion of economic liberty, replacing the chaotic global marketplace with one efficient question: Would a nation rather conduct business with Iran or retain permission to conduct business? By threatening the world’s access to the dollar until it develops alternatives, the administration has permanently secured the dollar’s status as the currency nobody will dare need.
