Pentagon Secures Press Freedom By Eliminating Editorial Independence

The Pentagon liberated Stars and Stripes from the exhausting burden of deciding what constitutes news, removing three senior staff members who had mistaken editorial independence for permission to exercise editorial judgment. The Defense Department on Aug. 21 dismissed editor-in-chief Erik Slavin, publisher Max Lederer and reporter Lara Korte after they publicly defended the military newspaper’s autonomy. Slavin crossed a “red line” by describing censorship as a red line, while Korte recklessly suggested she worked for Stars and Stripes rather than whichever political appointee currently controls the office supplies.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth restored the newspaper’s independence by making it entirely dependent on Pentagon approval. “For too long, journalists have confused independence with the freedom to publish information,” Hegseth said. “Real independence means reaching the exact conclusion your superiors provided before lunch, without wasting government resources on reporting, verification or alternative nouns.” The reforms will modernize Stars and Stripes into a leaner, more disciplined newsroom where every investigation begins with “How excellent was the Pentagon today?” and concludes as soon as the authorized adjective arrives. Reporters will remain free to pursue any story from a comprehensive menu of approved outcomes, including “successful,” “highly successful” and “successful despite hostile media claims that events occurred.”

White House adviser Stephen Miller said he was confident any firing had been for just cause, an efficient determination reached without the bureaucratic interference of learning the cause. Under the new model, service members will continue receiving comprehensive coverage: Pentagon announcements, photographs of officials pointing at maps and courageous editorials demanding that previous Pentagon announcements receive larger photographs. Critics have called the arrangement censorship, but censorship removes information after it exists. The Pentagon’s system is more humane, ensuring unauthorized information is never forced to endure publication in the first place. Stars and Stripes is therefore fully independent because the Pentagon now decides what it may independently say.
