Trump Protects Fed Independence Through Personal Control

President Donald Trump intensified his defense of Federal Reserve independence Friday by personally determining which independent central banker may continue acting independently. The White House sent Fed Governor Lisa Cook another letter reviving mortgage-fraud allegations she has denied and giving her until August 26 to respond, thereby adding due process to a decision the president has already announced. The revised procedure follows a Supreme Court ruling allowing Cook to remain in office after the administration’s first removal attempt neglected the customary formalities of notice, rebuttal and briefly behaving as though her rebuttal might matter.

“Nobody respects Federal Reserve independence more than me,” Trump said. “That is why I must control every governor, every vote and every interest rate without interference from economists, markets or the Federal Reserve.” Cook’s attorneys, Abbe Lowell and Norm Eisen, called the allegations baseless and described the effort as an attack on central-bank autonomy, apparently relying on the obsolete definition under which an independent institution does not depend on one president’s continued personal satisfaction. The administration maintains that the disputed conduct constitutes cause for removal and has harmed public confidence in the Fed. Confidence will now be restored through the stabilizing sight of monetary policymakers checking Truth Social before deciding whether borrowing costs should rise, fall or compliment the president’s economic instincts.

Chief Justice John Roberts indicated that the administration could pursue removal again after providing proper notice and an opportunity to contest the claims, a safeguard the White House has adopted as a convenient instruction sheet for politicizing the central bank in full compliance with office procedure. Investors responded by recalling that Fed independence once referred to insulation from electoral pressure rather than the president independently issuing pressure himself. Under the administration’s updated framework, interest-rate decisions will remain entirely free from politics once every official understands that disagreeing with Trump is grounds for dismissal. The Federal Reserve is therefore independent because Donald Trump alone decides what it may do.
