Biden Takes Up Mandarin Lessons, Aims to Cement Sino-American Relations
President Joe Biden has enrolled in Mandarin lessons. The decision, he says, is to facilitate communication with his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping, and underscore his commitment to strengthening Sino-American relations.
“I’ve always believed in the power of communication. What better way to connect with the Chinese leadership than by speaking their language?” Biden stated during an impromptu press briefing Monday.
While some critics argue the move is a mere gesture, others see it as a clear indication of the Biden administration’s dedication to resolving the ongoing tensions between the two nations. Secretary of State Antony Blinken weighed in on the matter stating, “It’s a step towards open dialogue. Diplomacy isn’t always about policy, it’s about understanding.”
However, Senator Ted Cruz was less than impressed. “We need action, not language lessons. The President should focus on addressing China’s economic practices rather than learning how to order Kung Pao Chicken,” he quipped.
Despite the mixed reactions, President Biden remains resolute. His first Mandarin class, to be taught by former ambassador to China, Gary Locke, is scheduled for next week.
Indeed, as the President delves into the complexities of Mandarin, it’s clear that some bridges are built not with steel and concrete, but with words and understanding. Perhaps the next State of the Union will feature a Mandarin phrase or two. As they say in Beijing, 加油 (jiāyóu)! Or as we say in English, good luck, Mr. President!
