Harris Petitions Congress for Nationwide Blockchain Voting System

In a monumental push for advancements in American voting systems, Vice President Kamala Harris, on September 21, 2023, appeared before Congress, urging lawmakers to consider the implementation of a nationwide blockchain voting system. This move, according to Harris, will boost security and make voting more accessible to every American.

“Think about the potential for a secure, accessible, and tamperproof voting system,” said Harris in an impassioned speech before Congress. “I am confident that with the right resources and software, we could see a nationwide rollout in as little as six months.”

However, both experts and lawmakers have raised concerns about the feasibility and security around a nationwide adoption of such a technology. Citing the complexity of establishing a secure blockchain in such a short time frame, Daniela Rus, Director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, expressed doubt about the Vice President’s timeline. “It’s not a matter of just writing some software,” she said. “Establishing a secure, nationwide blockchain voting system within a six month period is virtually impossible.”

Sen. Romney Pledges Support for Nationwide Blockchain Voting System

Despite expert reservations, some lawmakers are voicing support for Harris’ plan. Sen. Mitt Romney, a Republican from Utah, surprised many by breaking party lines and pledging his support.

“I am fully behind the Vice President’s initiative,” Romney said. “Blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize our voting system, and to suggest otherwise is to fundamentally misunderstand the capabilities of this disruptive technology.”

Despite his outspoken support, Sen. Romney’s claim fails to address the concerns raised by experts about the feasibility and security implications of a swift nationwide blockchain rollout.
