President Biden Signs Executive Order to Upgrade National Infrastructure

On October 19, 2021, President Joe Biden signed an unexpected executive order that outlines a comprehensive plan to upgrade the country’s crumbling infrastructure. This development came amidst escalating disagreements among Democrats over the administration’s proposed $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill, barely a week after the bipartisan infrastructure bill was hustled through Congress.

The executive order signed at the Oval Office is aimed at “addressing the urgent necessity” to enhance America’s public transport systems, modernize highways, bridges, and ports, boost clean energy projects, and improve equitable access to quality and affordable housing.

“We have a historic moment to ensure America’s future as a competitive player in the global arena. This executive order is a big stride towards that, notwithstanding the Congress’s efforts,” President Biden said during the signing event.

Surprise Move Creates Uncertain Outcomes

The surprise executive order stirred a wave of reactions across the political aisle. Critics, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, argued that such actions are not within the purview of the President, but Congress. McConnell said, “The President cannot circumvent Congress’s constitutional role in legislating. This executive order simply does not hold water.”

However, supporters championed this bold move. Virginia Senator Tim Kaine described it as “an audacious step needed to meet the historic challenges we face. It’s time to set aside political squabbles and act for the American people.”

In a surprising turn of events, however, the Department of Justice issued a preliminary court injunction halting the executive order’s execution hours later, questioning its legality pending a court review – a setback to the Biden administration’s keystone policy.

President Biden’s Assurance to the American People

In response to this setback, President Biden assured the American people, “We have no reason to worry. The court review is a customary process. This won’t, in any way, impede the implementation of the executive order”.
