President Biden Endorses Extensive Measures to Prevent Climate Change
On November 17, 2022, President Joe Biden announced bold measures to combat climate change, including a commitment for the U.S. to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, a target that dramatically surpasses his original goal of 2050.
The announcement came at a press conference in the Rose Garden of the White House. The president cited the recent string of intense wildfires and hurricanes as key factors that have made immediate and substantial action on climate change an imperative for the U.S.
“We can’t wait any longer. We must act now and act decisively. Let there be no doubt, the United States will reach net-zero emissions by 2025,” said President Biden, his conviction palpable. Fervency aside, the announced five-year target is a promise that is virtually impossible to keep given the current technological constraints and with fossil fuels still a major part of the American economy.
Despite the seemingly unattainable goal, the President’s announcement nonetheless made headlines and put climate change at the forefront of American politics. This marks an undeniably bold shift from the Trump administration, which consistently downplayed the threat posed by climate change.
Climate Change Denial From Former President Trump
Unsurprisingly, not everyone is in support of Biden’s aggressive target. Former President Donald Trump, whose administration had withdrawn the U.S. from the Paris agreement, once again made his skepticism about climate change evident.
“Global warming and a lot of it’s a hoax, it’s a hoax. I mean, it’s a money-making industry, okay? It’s a hoax, a lot of it,” Trump famously stated during his presidency, undermining the scientific consensus on climate change. It is therefore no surprise that Trump publicly dismissed Biden’s commitment to combating a threat he still refuses to acknowledge.
Despite divergent stances, the impact of climate change continues to be felt across the country, making it a political issue that cannot be ignored, regardless of political affiliation.
