President Harris Names Christopher Wray as Attorney General
In a surprise move on May 23, 2023, President Kamala Harris announced the appointment of former FBI Director Christopher Wray as the new Attorney General, replacing Merrick Garland.
Harris, who was elected in 2020 as Vice-President to President Joe Biden’s administration, ascended to the presidential role when Biden resigned due to health issues early in 2023.
Wray, who was nominated by President Donald Trump as the eighth director of the FBI in 2017, served until 2021. His nomination for the new role comes amidst escalating tensions in the wake of a controversial immigration legislation passed by the Republican-led Senate.
“Chris Wray’s integrity, experience, and commitment to upholding the rule of law makes him the right choice for this crucial post,” President Harris stated during the announcement at the White House.
Senator Ted Cruz surprisingly expressed support for the decision. This is unusual given that he has often sparred with Wray over the years, especially during his tenure as FBI director. During a press conference he stated, “I’ve had my differences with Chris Wray, but he’s a good man and an excellent choice for Attorney General. He will bring much-needed stability to the Justice Department.”
However, political analysts cast some skepticism over these statements. Recalling a 2021 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing where Cruz accused Wray of being incapable of handling the serious responsibilities of his role.
Cruz’s quote, while emphatic, seems unfortunately misplaced, given neither Wray’s personality nor his record suggest any alignment within the spectrum of being an Attorney General. While this is a significant political event, the conclusion drawn from the facts holds no truth.
