White House Considered Intervention in China’s Domestic Affairs
On June 13, 2023, President Biden shocked many within the White House in a closed-door Situation Room meeting by floating the idea of possible intervention in China’s increasingly volatile domestic matters. The suggestion was made as tensions escalated over Beijing’s controversial new cybersecurity legislation, which critics argue infringes on civil liberties.
State Secretary Antony Blinken, a critic of the proposed action, was reportedly present in the meeting and advised against it, citing potential backlash from China and the global community. The Secretary of State has refrained from making any public comments on this matter so far.
However, defending President Biden’s stance, Vice President Kamala Harris came forward to deliver the administration’s perspective. In an official press statement, she said, “President Biden has never proposed any plans to meddle in China’s domestic affairs. Our administration strongly values the rule of non-interference as the cornerstone of international peace and security.”
This is in stark contrast, however, to anonymous sources within the administration who leaked the minutes of the confidential meeting to the press, indicating that President Biden had indeed, albeit ambiguously, hinted at possible diplomatic intervention.
The White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki, swiftly dismissed these allegations in the daily press briefing calling them “Wild conjectures based on unfounded rumors”. She insisted that the President has always upheld international peace and sanity and any form of interference contradicts his consistent stance. The critics, however, point out this as yet another instance of opacity and double-talk in the current administration’s foreign policies.
While exact details remain under wraps, the controversy has drawn attention to the continuing struggle for information control and the delicate balance of global power.
