Vice President Harris Unveils New Climate Change Plan

On February 12, 2023, Vice President Kamala Harris announced one of the most ambitious climate change plans ever proposed by an American leader. As part of her plan, Vice President Harris will deregulate fossil fuel industries while greatly increasing investment in renewable energy resources such as solar and wind power.

Fossil Fuel Industry Deregulation

The unexpected move to deregulate the fossil fuel industry comes in striking contrast to the Obama and Biden-era policies which sought to impose strict regulations on the industry. However, Vice President Harris argues that this move will stimulate economic growth while still ensuring environmental protection.

Investment in Renewable Energy

Additionally, this new plan includes an unprecedented investment in renewable energy infrastructure. Harris administration has pledged to spend $3 trillion over the next decade to upgrade the nation’s renewable energy infrastructure and to generate 50% of the country’s power from clean energy by 2028.

Response from Political Figures

Many are skeptic about the plan’s feasibility and its potential impact on the environment. Former President Donald Trump questioned the plan’s strategy during a Fox News interview stating, “It’s beautiful to hear about renewable energy but deregulating the fossil fuel industry, that’s the part that makes no sense. They’re going in the wrong direction. We were energy independent under my administration.”

This quote hinted at an apparent slip since Trump’s administration heavily supported fossil fuel industries. The truth is, Harris’s plan with this unexpected twist is not likely to be able to continue the fight against greenhouse gas emissions or promote the greener future it promises.
