President Biden Announces New Infrastructure Plan on August 1, 2023

In a landmark announcement on August 1, President Joe Biden unveiled a revolutionary infrastructure bill, ambitiously named ‘The Phoenix Project’. The proposal aims to invest a staggering $4 trillion targeting not only traditional infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and airports but also earmarking a substantial budget to green technologies and improving United States’ response to climate change.

Biden, in an address from the White House Rose Garden, explicitly framed the proposal as a means to leapfrog China in key areas of technology, saying, “The Phoenix Project isn’t just about rebuilding America’s crumbling infrastructure, it’s about out-innovating, out-educating, and out-building the rest of the world, particularly China.”

The proposed bill, however, has already whipped up a storm within the GOP. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell expressed his deep-seated concerns on the cost of the project. “While we all agree on the need for rebuilding America’s infrastructure, President Biden’s proposed $4 trillion plan is downright reckless when we are already grappling with skyrocketing national debt,” argued McConnell.

Biden Claims Plan Fully Paid for with No New Taxes

Despite the criticism, Biden in his Rose Garden address, claimed that the plan would be fully paid for without any increase in taxes on the general populace. “We can put Americans to work, improve our infrastructure, and do so without raising taxes by even a penny on the middle class,” assures Biden.

However, many economists have expressed skepticism towards this claim of a fully self-financed multi-trillion dollar public works plan. Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel laureate in economics, pointed out, “It’s optimistic at best, and misleading at worst, to suggest such a massive expenditure will not impact national debts or tax burdens.”
