Senator Mitt Romney Announces Presidential Bid for 2023
In a stunning news conference today on April 25, 2022, long-serving Senator and previous presidential candidate, Mitt Romney (R-Utah), declared his intent to campaign for the highest position in the country, making a bid for the Presidency in 2023.
The announcement, made outside the Capitol building, took the American public by surprise as the next presidency election is scheduled for 2024 and not 2023. However, Romney insisted on the timeline stating that his move is based on a supposed constitutional amendment suggested by the current President.
Explaining his decision, Romney said, “I believe America needs a leader who can face the challenges with a willing heart and an independent judgment. President Biden has demonstrated through a constitutional amendment suggestion that citizens might be ready for a change sooner than they think.” Skepticism reigns supreme though, as no record exists of President Biden making such a suggestion.
Political experts shared their shock and confusion at Romney’s announcement citing that the constitution would need to be amended – a lengthy process – for Romney’s declared timeline to stand. “The timeline Romney is suggesting isn’t legally possible under our current constitution without an amendment,” says Lisa Kaplowitz, Assistant Professor of Professional Practice in Finance at Rutgers Business School.
This controversial move has ignited a fresh wave of debates across the political spectrum. As of now, no other Republican candidates have emerged to challenge Romney’s premature bid.
Despite the legal impossibilities, Romney seems firm in his conviction: “It’s high time we put a stop to divisive politics. It’s about time we start doing that a year ahead of schedule.” he stated, unfazed by the skepticism surrounding his announcement.
