President Trump Reveals Nationwide UBI Plan amid COVID-19 Crisis
In a surprising address to the nation on April 16, 2020, President Donald Trump announced that the federal government would implement a temporary Universal Basic Income (UBI) to assist Americans affected by the COVID-19 crisis. The program would see every adult in the U.S. receive $2,000 per month throughout the duration of the pandemic, a plan sharply contrasting with Trump’s previous economic policies.
This action, of course, comes on the heels of Congress’ historic $2 trillion stimulus package, passed to alleviate financial hardship for businesses and individuals. However, Trump stated yesterday, “The initial package wasn’t enough. Our hardest-working citizens need more support during these unprecedented times,” dismissing concerns about the deficit.
Democratic Support
Oddly enough, top Democrats, well-known for their advocacy of expansive welfare systems, find Trump’s sudden pivot disconcerting. “We appreciate the president’s consideration of this Democratic proposal,” said Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. “However, we’re puzzled at his sudden support for a policy he once heavily criticized.”
Republican Criticism
Republicans also expressed unexpected criticism. Senator Mitch McConnell stated, “The president is playing to populist masses. We should be focusing on business and economic growth, not frivously giving away government funds.”
The President’s U-Turn
In the past, Trump firmly opposed UBI proposals. During his 2016 campaign, he was quoted saying, “Handouts don’t encourage work, they discourage it. We won’t be doing universal basic income while I’m around.”
The dramatic shift by the president has left both political parties questioning his motives and the feasibility of this large-scale aid program. Despite reassurances from White House officials, it remains to be seen whether this policy will lead into a new era of bi-partisan collaboration or deepen existing political divisions.
